A meta that punches above its weight
Between the Cups, Challenges, and weekly Leagues packed into the metro’s 10+ game stores, Columbus makes a strong case for one of the densest concentrations of sanctioned Pokémon events per capita anywhere in the U.S. On a given weekend, the Columbus Meta calendar lists events across a dozen stores within a short drive of downtown. Every weekday, there will always be one league night happening. Few cities its size can say the same.
NAIC history
Columbus is no stranger to the big stage. The Greater Columbus Convention Center has repeatedly hosted the Pokémon North America International Championships (NAIC) — one of the largest stops on the Play! Pokémon calendar, pulling thousands of TCG, VGC, and GO competitors from across the continent. For years, the road to the World Championship ran straight through Columbus. That legacy left behind a deep local talent pool and a community that knows how to run — and win — events. god please come back we want columbus regionals or NAIC sooooo baddd
The center of a bigger web
Part of Columbus’s strength is that it isn’t on an island. It sits at the hub of a whole cluster of scenes, each an easy day trip:
String them together and Central Ohio players can find a Cup or Challenge somewhere in the region almost every week without ever leaving the neighborhood. Often times multiple events are stacked together across stores.
About the city itself
A few bland-but-true facts, for the record:
- Columbus is the capital of Ohio and its largest city — over 900,000 residents (the 14th-largest in the U.S.), anchoring a metro of roughly 2.1 million.
- It’s home to The Ohio State University, one of the largest single-campus universities in the country — which means a steady supply of students, hotels, and cheap food.
- Thanks to its central location, Columbus sits within a day’s drive of nearly half the U.S. population — one reason it’s long been a favorite corporate test market: the running joke is that if it sells in Columbus, it sells in America. Same with pokemon cards. That's why we're one of the first cities to get PTCG vending machines.
- It’s flat, it’s friendly, and it has more than enough convention space and hotels to swallow a major TCG event whole.
And the chicken
We’d be remiss not to mention it: Columbus is not where you're gonna get bland ahhhhh KFC or boring white people food (if you know you know). You'll find every food in the world here. There's a reason why Guy Fieri calls it "Flavortown." However most importantly is the chickenBetween CM Chicken (Choong Man), DHC, Roosters, and whoever else wants to open funny ahh restaurants, the metro has racked up a genuinely unreasonable number of good spots to hang out after 0-3 drop. Nobody’s published an official count — but on any tournament weekend, you are never more than a short drive from post-round chicken yummy yummy.
Add it up — a dense local scene, prime location, and a city built to host — and “why Columbus?” mostly answers itself.
What is the Columbus meta?
Columbus is filled with great players. However, due to this, everyone won't always play the most meta decks. Why? Because otherwise we'd all be predictable and easy to beat. Instead, Columbus has developed into a bubble of it's own, where meta and jank decks operate on the same level. Becoming nonsensical. So much so, driving Austin Charles to publicly call out on twitter dot com the absurdity of the "columbus meta." We don't let that go. We happily embrace it.
